Those cruel kids at school used to tease Jim Decker for being overweight. They would call him Jimbo (like Jumbo or Dumbo the elephant) and Double Decker (as in big red bus). He always took it in stride but I think it might have been part of the reason he lost interest in school and dropped out before finishing high school. Poor Jimmy. He was definitely on the hefty side. He was forever breaking the chairs he sat in at my house. My mother was always upset about it?along with the fact that he ate most of the food in our refrigerator when he would visit. That might not have been so annoying if he hadn't put the empty wrappers back when he was done.
I loved Jimmy. He was that kind of big-hearted guy who gave bear hugs and listened to me whine for as long as I needed to be heard. I'm sure there were plenty of times he wished I would just shut up but he never complained or seemed impatient. Somehow he always managed to end up as the third wheel in everybody'
I miss Jimmy very much. He was one of my best friends throughout most of my life. Will always remember palling around with Jimmy & Pierre Des Roche in high school & later years. Will miss them both.
I lived next door to Jim and spent a lot of elementary school afternoons with him. We would explore the neighborhood riding our bikes. Sometimes at the high school on the front lawn hills, sometimes in local parking structures. He was a close friend. Jimmy was very bright and quick physically which always impressed me. He was one of my closest friends in elementary school and I learned a lot from him. He seemed to be wise beyond his years.
